What is Melasma?
Chloasma is another name for melasma. Melasma is a dark skin discoloration found on sun-exposed areas of the face and
fades with time. This disorder is very common, especially in women of child-bearing age.
Melasma is characterized by patches of characteristic darkening often found on the face.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors of Melasma -
The true incidence of melasma is unknown, it is a very frequent disorder. Melasma is a common skin disorder in all types of skin, but tends to occur more often in dark skinned individuals.
Chloasma also occurs as a side-effect of taking contraceptive pills and injected depot contraceptive preparations.
Sunlight is a major factor in the development of melasma.
Melasma is more apparent during and after periods of sun exposure and less obvoius in winter months, when sun exposure is lacking.
Pregnancy (mask of pregnancy) is the most common cause of melasma.
